I am passionate about education. I love teaching and learning with my students, and encouraging creativity and deep thinking. For the past 17 years, I taught at High Tech Elementary Explorer where I designed Project Based Learning (PBL) curricula tied with Social Emotional Learning (SEL) for students ranging from kindergarten to 5th grade. I loved working in a school that had an SEL and PBL curriculum because it lead to authentic, meaningful learning for children. It has helped children develop into strong individuals who think critically and creatively, care about others, collaborate with others, and can communicate their thinking. I plan and facilitate workshops in which I share this kind of work with other educators around the globe. Prior to that, I taught for two and a half years at Arroyo Vista Charter School in the Chula Vista Elementary School District. At the University of California in San Diego, I studied psychology, visual arts, and education. I hold a B.A. in Psychology, multiple subject teaching credential, and a Master in Education from UCSD.
Before becoming a teacher at Explorer, I was an Explorer parent. As a parent, I noticed that my son loved going to school everyday. He felt like he belonged to a caring community of children, parents, and teachers. He was excited about learning and was motivated to do well. As he grew up, I noticed that his character development as an elementary school student is what he carried with him to middle school, high school, and beyond. I believe that the strengths he developed as a child continued to help him in his experiences in the university and in the work place. I understand the importance of education in a child's early years and its long lasting impact on children and our society.
In the last couple of years, I wanted to grow more as an educator and develop better ways to create a learning environment that supported neurodiversity. I studied at the High Tech High Teacher Center and gained an Education Specialist Instruction Credential. Last year, I served as both the General Education teacher for my 1st grade class as well as the Education Specialist for students with special needs within my grade level.
Aside from teaching, I enjoy traveling and exploring, learning about people and cultures, trying cuisine from different countries, hiking, painting, making jewelry, and spending time with my son and my shy cat named Little One.
